As this year's homecoming weekend grows closer, so does the anticipation of the Murray State community. Following in Racer tradition, floats will parade downtown, tent city will make its annual debut and Murray State royalty will grace Stewart Stadium's field.

With Homecoming at Murray State University comes increased traffic to the city, particularly in areas around the campus. An additional factor added to traffic this year is ongoing construction around MSU, particularly along Highway 121.

During the hustle and bustle of homecoming festivities, Racers will have a chance to celebrate the life of one of its dearest members, the late Jim Carter. Carter, the former vice president of institutional advancement and executive director of the Murray State University Alumni Association, will be honored with a dedication service at Oct. 9 at 3:30 p.m. The alumni brick plaza on the north lawn of the Sid Easley Alumni Center will be unveiled as the Carter Alumni Plaza.

The Murray State University Jazz Orchestra will host the first ever “Swingin’ Memories Dance” on Oct. 9, 2015 from 8 to 11 p.m. in the Curris Center Stables.  The event for ballroom and swing dancing will be a part of MSU’s homecoming activities and is open to the public. Listeners as well as dancers are welcome to attend. 


Alumni reception huge success, MSU alumni renovate Coca-Cola plant
Alumni mixed and mingled at a reception at Dry Ground Brewery in Paducah, Kentucky on Friday, Sept. 25. Over 90 alumni attended the event and enjoyed the craft beer, MSU free goodies, fine catering and a chance to tour the facility. 

MSU alumnae authors historical narrative
The University Press of Kentucky recently published “Lincoln’s Final Hours,” a historical narrative written by MSU alumnae Kathryn Canavan. 

Homecoming Theme Announced
Every community needs a hero, a masked crime fighter dedicated to defending values. Every homecoming needs a theme, providing direction during festivities. Coming October 2015, Murray State University releases an action-packed adventure, Homecoming 2015: Raise Your Shield.

MSU alumnus briefs UN Security Council committee
Political scientist and MSU alumnus Mark Nance had the opportunity of a lifetime when his research led him to interviewing members of a United Nations Security Council committee in late August 2015. 

MSU Alumni Association and Retriever Consulting create partnership
The Murray State University Alumni Association recently partnered with Retriever Consulting Inc. The company provides merchant services at a fraction of the cost of other providers, and 20 percent of its profits will be donated to the MSU Alumni Association. 

MSU alumnus holds photography exhibit
Murray State University’s Joseph Routon, a 1966 graduate, will hold a photography exhibit Sept. 20 through Oct. 31 at the Paris-Henry County Heritage Center in Paris, Tn. 

Fishing Scholarship Created in Memory of Jim Carter
Thanks to donations from FLW Outdoors and Independence Bank to honor the memory of Jim Carter, a scholarship will be awarded to the winning team of the Student Angler Federation Murray State High School Fishing Open Tournament.

Celebrating 60 Years of Integration: Tyler Demarta's Story

Although many have heard of Mary Ford Holland, the first black student enrolled on MSU’s campus, Nancy Tyler Demartra was the first black graduate at MSU. Demartra graduated May 29, 1961.
