Donor Spotlight: Benson D. Blackie

Benson D. Blackie of Benton, Ky., friend and generous supporter of Murray State University, knows the value of an international education. A world traveler and retired geophysicist, Blackie has recently established two scholarship funds at MSU to be funded by a $1.5 million Charitable Remainder Trust; the Benson D. and Novalee Roberts Blackie Endowed Scholarship and the Benson D. and Novalee Roberts Blackie Study Abroad Scholarship. Blackie established the scholarships in memory of his late wife Novalee Roberts Blackie, a 1941 Murray State alumna.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1918, Blackie served in the Transportation Corp as a sergeant technician during World War II from 1943-1946. After the war, he graduated from Ohio State University in 1950 and began working for he U.S. Geophysical Corporation in Pasadena, Cal. From 1950-1958 he worked in California, Colorado and Wyoming, and from 1958-1964 he worked in Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. His job also took him to sites in Spain, Egypt and Australia from 1964-1970.

In 1970, he and Novalee moved to Marshall County where they planned to retire. Not long after moving to Marshall County the United Nations asked Blackie to return to Chile and continue his work. He and Novalee returned to Chile in 1971 and stayed there until 1982 when he officially retired. They returned to Marshall County in 1982 living near Kentucky Lake.

Novalee earned her bachelor of science degree from Murray State in home economics. As a student, she was active on campus in the Household Arts Club, Pep Club and the Y.W.C.A., whom she worked for after graduation. She passed away in 1988 from cancer.

Benson and Novalee enjoyed traveling the world together. Both considered international travel and studies essential to anyone's education, and wished to assist others in experiencing international travel and study. Mr. Blackie has created a lasting legacy through the establishment of the Benson D. and Novalee Roberts Blackie Endowed Scholarship and the Benson D. and Novalee Roberts Blackie Study Abroad Scholarship.
